You will build and oversee an overarching, strategic and integrated framework for informing Novartis positions on geopolicy, trade and competitiveness. You will integrate geopolitically relevant elements of key ESG trends into your analysis and work, distilling clear implications for life sciences competitiveness and advocacy asks. You will leverage a strong network of senior functional and regional experts to monitor and assess emerging geopolicy priorities to develop Novartis positions and messaging on key policy issues. The role will lead a dedicated group bringing in expertise in trade, macroeconomics and productivity to drive competitiveness messaging, and geopolitical intelligence gathering.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify key geopolitical trends and developments for the life sciences industry and from a cross-industry lens in key NVS geographies.
  • Provide predictive expert analysis and guidance on global trade policies and macroeconomic environment developments impacting the life sciences industry to identify opportunities for engagement and growth 
  • Evaluate risks and opportunities in the international trade policy landscape to inform strategic and data-driven decision-making 
  • Liaise with Top 4 PA leads to integrate local policy insights on geopolitics and trade.  
  • Scan horizon for opportunities to engage with stakeholders in markets or key multilaterals, e.g. OECD, G7 
  • Establish predictive, data-driven monitoring framework for tracking and assessing geopolitical risks impacting Novartis, aimed towards facilitating informed decision-making and risk mitigation.  
  • Build understanding of knock-on effect of geopolicies on different parts of the life sciences value chain, map exposure of Novartis value chain to priority geopolicies over time and outline business impact.  
  •  Build understanding of knock-on effect of ESG policies on different parts of the life sciences value chain, its competitiveness, and map exposure of Novartis value chain over time.
  • Build understanding of knock-on effects of national policies in one or more of US, CN, EU and JP. 
  • Build understanding of the economic impact (GDP, GVA, labor productivity, employment) of Novartis footprint, and shape ability to articulate it as investment at local, national, regional level to unlock new funding streams 
  • Provide expertise and knowledge on global trade policy, macroeconomic work on life sciences and industrial competitiveness .
  • Shape global policy position around security of supply, shortages and related industrial policy topics 
  • Derive actionable, data-driven recommendations and shape policy positioning to enhance industrial competitiveness of life sciences sector as anchor for our broader policy asks  
  • Build geopolicy intelligence process linking insights from Policy, ERC and Global Security to scan the horizon, brief and activate the ECN on key developments

What you’ll bring to the role:

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Expensive experience of progressively responsible industry experience. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in assessing complex trade policies and agreements, with an understanding of implications on the life sciences industry 
  • Proven ability to analyse macroeconomic trends and their impact on industry competitiveness to inform strategic decision-making and shape policy and advocacy efforts.
  • Strategic thinking and predictive analytical skills, ability to assess external trends and developments, guiding management and team in decision-making.
  • Exposure to key ESG policy trends and understanding of their impact on competitiveness of the life sciences industry across it value chain.
  • External orientation, with a strong external network and excellent interpersonal and partnering skills with excellent Business and organizational awareness, enterprise perspective. Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a global matrix organization.
  • Fluent In English    

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Master’s degree in Regulatory Affairs, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Health Policy, or related field is preferred. 
  • Experience relevant to US, EU and/or China. Experience with MLOs.
